Dogs

We have always owned and enjoyed dogs, until we retired and moved south. Here are a few pets from our past and a few from the present. Dogs have a very important role in family life. Our daughters grew up with litters of miniature schnauzers and they appreciate the value of owning pets (or pets owning them).

Rusty
Rusty

Rusty was Ev's Dad's dog. Dad was fishing in a flooded river when he saved a little puppy who was caught in the current. Rusty was very shy then, but he grew up to be the most intelligent companion dog we ever knew. Once when Dad took Rusty hunting, Rusty grabbed a hen pheasant as the bird flew off the ground. He did not hurt the bird, but released it when Dad told him he should not grab live birds, especially hens. Rusty also loved to fish. We did not need a dipnet; he would walk in the water, put his head in the water, and grab the fish to bring it in. Rusty was also a transporter of bait, cans, bottles. We just told him where to take something to someone and he understood. He could even carry a live earthworm to another fisherman. He stayed with family members until he died in 1970 when he was 18 years old. Rusty is shown here fishing with John, before Ev and John were married. We took him hiking and fishing - a perfect companion. Rusty lived a very fulfilling life, and we still miss him.

Rocky and Penny

Rocky, a German shepherd, and Penny, a miniature schnauzer, are shown in the first house John and Ev bought after getting married in 1954. The dogs got along very well with each other, except for one time. Both dogs were walking on a pier on a deep lake and Rocky purposely pushed Penny into the water with his head. We retrieved her with no problem, but Rocky thought it was funny.

Ace High Pennyroyal, CD, Ev's dog, is shown with a few of her trophies earned in conformation and obedience. She was from the Dorem kennel breeding. We belonged to an active kennel club and attended many shows and matches in our younger days. Penny was the start of our breeding of schnauzers.

Rocky

Rocky, John's dog, is helping him shine his 1956 Ford. Rocky earned high scores in obedience and easily earned his Companion Dog degree, winning several ribbons, trophies and awards. He quickly learned hand signals and commands in other languages. Rocky was also a big "show-off."

Samantha and Krikit

Vee Gee's Krikit and her daughter, Vee Gee's Samantha, are two more miniature schnauzers we had owned. No longer with the kennel club, we just enjoyed the dogs as house pets and an occasional litter of pups. This is Ev by Vicky's kayak in the carport of the third home we owned, still in cold Illinois.

Snuffy

Tankka's Snuffy was Vicky's dog. We bought her in 1977 from a mini-farm where she was top dog over a German shepherd and a bunch of horses. She went with Vicky to college until Vicky joined the Peace Corps.

Frisky is the pet of Val and Larry. She was a puppy when this picture was taken in Illinois. She is now over thirteen years old and more fun than ever. Frisky also has her own website which can be reached by clicking here.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Three Champion Rhodesian ridgebacks are shown with Tom and Vicky in Wisconsin. They show their dogs in conformation, obedience, agility, coursing, and tracking. For more information about these dogs, please click here.
